Abensberg
Battle of, 20 April 1809. The Austrian attack on the French forces in Bavaria on 9 April achieved suprise, and it was only after Napoleon's arrival at the front (17th) that the confusion was halted. Placing Lannes in command of a provisional corps of 25000 men in the center, with Davout's III Corps on his left and Lefebvre's VII Corps on the right, Napoleon launched a major attack against the Archduke Charles overextended center, passing south of Abensberg. This split the Austrian army in two, Charles retreating on Eckmuhl with his right wing while his left retreated south under General Hiller to Landshut. The French (113000 strong) thus regained the initiative in the campaign of 1809 and defeated some 161000 Austrians, killing and wounding 2700 and taking some 4000 prisoners of war.

Almeida
Siege and blocade of 1810 and 1811. This Portuguese fortress, guarding the Northern Corridor, fell to Marshall Ney on 28 August 1812 after a 12 day siege. Brigadier General Cox's defense was compromised by the explosion of his magazine on 27th. Following Massena's retreat from Portugal early in 1811, the Allies invested Almeida on 4 April. French attempts to relieve General Brennier's garrison of 1300 led to the battle of Fuentes de Onoro . Thereafter Brennier broke out with his garrison on 10 May, to Wellington's rage. Almeida remained in Allied possesion for the rest of the war.

Barrosa
Battle of 5 March 1811. As 15000 Spanish and British troops, commanded by General Graham, marched from Tarifa toward Cadiz intent on disrupting the French blocade of that city, contact was made with 7000 French troops on the Cerro del Puerco above the tower of Barrosa. The 28th Foot, abandoned by its Spanish allies, fell back from the Cerro, but on Graham's order charged back up the hill supported by the two British brigades that ultimately defeated General Laval's French troops. The 87th took an eagle, and scattered two French battalions. The loss of 1200 British casualties secured the march to Cadiz, but General La Pena's Spaniards had merely observed the action.
